They're the key to the bullion ASE series, but they're not rare in the slightest--- about 3.5 million. I think they've hit their peak.
Production on these was halted midway through the year when they developed spotting, so it is rare to find one in MS70.

If you've already got 'em, might as well hang on. When (IMHO not if) the US Mint stops producing SAEs, '96s will zoom to the moon.

From around 2005ish until 07ish they were selling for a hundred, sometimes a hundred plus, in PCGS MS69.

I cashed out in that range.

Don't know what the future holds for them, but I wouldn't be thinking they are some kind of dark horse that will make you rich.

Keep in mind the 94's were going for around 50ish to 70 back then as well, and the 97's (Milk Spot Free) were at least 40. They have all CRASHED in demand & price, since then!

The rarer years are 96, 94, 97, 95, &, 98 and I do believe one of the the newer W's has replaced the 96 in rarity... Can't quote me on that one though...

I say, "Stay away from it". Stick with the proofs or a few small sets of the W's, as a speculation play instead.

overrated coin deluxe 2k9 premium edition

You can pick up a brand new BU kiwi 999 with a mintage of less than 10k for the same amount.

"...They're the key to the bullion ASE series, but they're not rare in the slightest--- about 3.5 million."

It's been my understanding that the high price of '96 ASE's is due to the fact that so many of them went overseas.

If this is true, then the coin's coming back will hurt current prices. A few months ago a bullion dealer told me that coins coming back into the country is what has lowered their value to $45-$50.

Like others have said, I think they've peaked in price(a couple years back). They are not rare at all.

The reason I say I think they've peaked in price is that i've steadily watched the sales price go down on these regardless of grade.

The overseas thing makes perfect sense - I never thought of that. Never thought the modern junk would be that appealing. In addition, I think E-Bay buddies were bumping their friends bids up, up, and away more rampantly back then. Nonetheless, thanks for sharing the thought.:emotions16:
